The Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles (MOCA) is a museum that actually has three
branches in the city itself. The other two branches are The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA which is
located at 152 North Central Avenue in Little Tokyo and the MOCA Pacific Design Center at 8687
Melrose Avenue in West Hollywood.
MOCA's main branch is located on Grand Avenue, close to the Walt Disney Concert Hall, and is
the only museum in Los Angeles devoted to contemporary art. The building itself is an attraction,
having won numerous design accolades for its contemporary red sandstone exterior, designed by
renowned Japanese architect Arata Isozaki.
The Museum of Contemporary Art’s exhibits consist of American and European art. On display
are prominent works from the 1940’s to the 1980’s, including pieces by influential figures such as
Jean Michel Basquiat, Dan Flavin, Willem de Kooning, Robert Rauschenberg, Mark Rothko, Jackson
Pollock, Piet Mondrian and many more. The entire collection numbers over 5,000 items,
including different visual media. The Museum has grown over the years through key acquisitions and
donations from institutions and individuals. Special exhibits are on view throughout the year in
addition to the permanent collection.
The museum offers a dining option for patrons at Cafe Lemonade, serving a selection of
soups, salads and sandwiches.
MOCA is open from 11am and closes at varying times each day. It is closed
Tuesdays and Wednesdays with free admission on Thursdays.
The
Millennium Biltmore Los Angeles hotel
is just down the street from the Museum of Contemporary Art, making it easy for guests to access
this destination.
