Considered to feature the highest quality of theatrical presentations around world, the term Broadway has become internationally synonymous with theater. Long before the invention of the television, Broadway was the home of entertainment.

It is this same tradition that has been carried over since around 1750 and is the defining quality of New York’s Broadway. It was once thought that the advent of the cinema and video technology would replace Broadway but clearly this wasn’t the case as Broadway is still going strong. Today Broadway brings in revenue figures over $1.5 billion a year in ticket sales.

Visitors to our hotel near the Theater District can discover the wide array of different shows that take place on Broadway. Some of the most popular and longest running shows include the internationally acclaimed ‘The Lion King’, ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ and ‘The Color Purple’. Beyond the major hits, a range of other performances are scheduled during different times of the year and plays themselves run for a period that is generally determined by their popularity.

Beyond the most famous Broadway shows, two offshoots were formed known as Off-Broadway and Off-Off Broadway respectively. Off-Broadway presents shows that are more controversial and less likely to be accepted in the mainstream. Consequently its productions feature lower budgets than regular Broadway presentations. Off-Off Broadway offers relatively low cost productions that cater to a much smaller market. Creativity and originality can often be their selling point.

Several options are available when it comes to purchasing a ticket to see a Broadway performance. The least expensive option should you know what shows are taking place where, is to visit the theater prior to a screening and purchasing a ticket directly from the box office. Visitors should note that box offices are usually only open for a selected amount of time each day and should call the theater in advance to find the times. More popular shows will generally sellout so advance ticket purchases are recommended. Other alternatives for obtaining tickets include online websites that allow the purchase of your ticket.

Located next to the Millennium Broadway Hotel, The Hudson Theatre was originally a vibrant theatre that was host to notable plays including Cousin Kate, the Taming of the Shrew, Toys in the Attic, and Hot Chocolate. Having being used for various different purposes, today the theatre functions as a meeting and event venue for Millennium Broadway Hotel. It is also the only theater in New York that hosts weddings and other events.

There are numerous hotels near Broadway to cater to the many that come to New York just to indulge in the extravaganza of a Broadway show.
